Bodybreaking: meet your DJs!

Posted by The Wittiest of Skunks on October 5, 2011

So, guess you wanna meet who’ll be in charge of spinning the beats this Friday at Spit? Guess no more.

Meet DJ Cho Cha

Cho Cha totally, absolutely loves dj’in….That’s the first thing that comes to mind if anyone ever asked her bout it. She has a great passion for the art and is not limited to any specific genres. You’ll hear her play anything from The Foundations- Buttercup to AC/DC to Justin Timberlake to 2pac…to George Michael to Madonna to Tom Petty…to Soulja Boy,.etc…and more and more….her nite’s are coined as “anything and everything good”. That may stem from being a classically trained pianist since the age of 4, giving her an amazing ear for it. She’s known as the Dj that “plays for the people”, reads the crowd and packs the dancefloor.

Cho Cha loves variety. She’s very creative, always looking to be the first to play that good song or mashup, or do a live remix that no one’s ever done before. She uses Serato on Vinyl but was one of the oldskoolers who started out collecting crates and crates of records. She was the winner of the Vancouver Megablend DJ Competition in 2009.

Cho Cha is recognized as one of Vancouver’s best Dj’s leaving you wanting more after a show. She’s played across the world from Vancouver to the United States to Taiwan.

Cho Cha’s been dj’in for almost 10 years and worked with all of Van city’s best Dj’s from Radio to Clubs(Flipout, Jay Swing, Supafly, Wax). You can find her on any given night at the top clubs in Vancouver- Republic, Fabric, Plaza(Venue), Canvas, Boss, Shine, Red Room, etc. She was a resident for Vancouver’s biggest lesbian party promoter’s Flygirl Production’s for quite a few years and was a resident of Vancouver’s only lesbian club Lick(The Lotus). She also promote’s and DJ’s for the very popular Girls Gone Wild monthly parties. You can catch her Tues at Junction Pub on Davie, Friday’s at Pop Opera & Saturday’s at Seymour’s Pub(North Van)

The second half of the night’s beat droppers: DJ Jay Douglas!

Jay Douglas (aka EddyToonflash) really loves house music. He’s been a working dj for over 10 years between Vancouver and Edmonton. Now he’s back in Vancouver and looking to get busy once again.

Jay had the extremely fortunate opportunity to land a weekly Saturday residency at Vancouver’s legendary gay after-hours The World (8:16 Granville) as he was starting out in Vancouver back in 2000. While there, he was schooled by two of Vancouver’s most respected dj’s: Todd Omotani and Dj Dickey Doo. From Dickey he learned how to fuel a crowd and to keep the vibe dynamic. From Todd he learned what it is to truly master the art of mixing and caught the Chicago bug deep inside his soul. Playing at The World exposed Jay to some of the world’s first class dj talent as well. He was able to get right in close to people like J Dub, Honey Dijon, Markus Whyatt, Dj Collette to name a few.

Until the cops shut it down, Jay had a super successful Sunday afterparty at Section #3 called D’tension in Yaletown (thanks Salli). (those who were there undoubtedly remember the good times we all had)

Jay also played regularly at various spots around Vancouver in the early 2000’s. The Chameleon, Shine, Milk, The Royal, The Freehouse, The Oddysey, Tokyo Lounge, Fashion Cares Vancouver, various boat cruises, and even had an in-store gig one winter playing Saturday afternoons at the Armani Exchange store on Robson.

Around 2004, Jay felt the need to switch things up and moved back to Edmonton. While there he went back to school and took the Digital Media course through NAIT majoring in front end web design. He also kept dj’ing on the side. While in Edmonton, he had residencies at Buddies, The Roost (RIP) and PLAY. Seduction Saturdays at PLAY was Jay’s night and for 2 years he had a full house.

Fast forward to 2011 and Jay is back on the west coast. Some things have changed in his absence and some things have stayed the same. There are new faces and new places to party but Vancouver is still a beautiful and exciting city with lots going on. Hopefully Jay will be able to find a spot to fit in and do what he loves… keeping house music alive!

How’s that?! See you all this Friday at the Anza, for another rad edition of SPIT.
