partner profile – the Health Initiative for Men (HIM)

Posted by mkushnir on July 5, 2010

so, here’s a fact about us here at SPIT: we work hard – and play hard – but we honestly can’t pull it all off without some serious help!

thankfully, we are lucky to get a hand out from dozens of talented volunteers, as well as some spectacular community partners! to that end, we’d like to recognize each of them.

we’ve sent our not-so-undercover reporter (ok, it was me in my jammies at home over e-mail) out on a reconnaissance mission to figure out what the hell happens across town. first up, the Health Initiative for Men (HIM). we tracked down our friend KEITH to let us know what’s going on over at their oh-so-wonderfully named organization…

Who are you and what do you do?

My name’s Keith and I’m professionally gay… no that makes me sound like a rentboy… I keep the condom companies in business by giving it away for free… The condoms I mean.

Tell us about HIM.

HIM is a community-based organization dedicated to strengthening the health and well-being of gay men. Our vision of health encompasses physical, mental, social and sexual aspects of gay men’s lives.

What’s the best thing about working with HIM?

Between spending my day listening to show tunes and going to clubs it’s hard to decide… Perhaps it’s that I get paid for doing it.

Funniest story on the job?

A heterosexual couple walks into HIM. The husband wanted to know what services we could offer them (I was happy to show him a few things). The wife meanwhile, was engrossed (or maybe just grossed out) by our Bear Orgy poster… I’ve never seen someone’s eyes go so wide.

If I’m buying a round, you’re having…?

Something cheap and pretty, like me.

Best memory at SPIT?

I tend not to remember what happens at SPIT, but if I did I would have the sense to NOT talk about it!
